There is a lot of talk about gun control due to the recent tragic events. I know everyone has a strong opinion one way or the other, and I am no different. I will be the first to say that I believe in the right to own guns, and yes I do own them; however, I am all for putting a ban on assault style guns. Those guns were meant for the military and law enforcement. They were not meant for home protection and definitely not meant for hunting. I believe that the average person having an assault style gun is the perfect opportunity for trouble.
I have a friend who works at a gun shop and he said within the first few days after the Newtown events, they literally wiped out their inventory of guns. Today we were in the shop and the assault weapons were almost completely gone, but the other guns were still plentiful on the shelf.
I hope they do put a ban on the assault weapons.

Winter Shelter
I guess the birdie hotel we have in the bushes about 5 feet away is not to his liking. This little guy has been sleeping on our porch post for several evenings.

Holiday Shopping
My holiday shopping is done. Now I just need to get packages in the mail. I waited so late, I will either have to pay for express delivery or they may not get to their destination on time. I am really good about getting holiday cards out early, but the packages are a different story.
Hubby and I don't exchange Christmas gifts because we typically buy for each other throughout the year. This year, however, we are thinking about buying an exercise machine for the garage. We have a goal of each losing 50 pounds during 2013, so this would help us with our goal.

Thank You Chef Robert Lewis
Hubby and I attended the TCOYD (Take Control of Your Diabetes) seminar yesterday and it was extremely informative. We learned that we are actually doing well in many areas, but there is still room for improvement. One of the demonstrations I like the most was from The Happy Diabetic, Chef Robert Lewis. He made a 3 course meal in less than an hour and showed us all how easily it could be done without blowing our way of eating. After his demonstration, I purchased his cookbooks and had a chance to chat with him. He told me something that really clicked. He said, the secret to cooking is to not be afraid to take a risk. And from a diabetic standpoint, his goal is just to do better today than he did yesterday. Nothing magical, just one day at a time.
I realized after talking to Chef Robert, that I am afraid to take risks; and I have no idea why. I used to cook all the time, but have gotten timid about cooking. So, Thank You Chef Robert for those simple but eye opening words.

Vibram Five Finger "Smell" (huh?)
During some random Internet searches, I noticed some posts about people who are saying their shoes smell, some even say they downright stink. I have three pair of the Vibram Five Fingers shoes and absolutely love them. I have my dressy pair, my every day pair, and a pair that is a little older so they are used for yard work and the such. My shoes have never smelled, not even a little. I can wear them for hours at a time, even in the Texas heat, and they never develop a smell. No, I don't have special non-stink feet. Trust me, my feet and shoes will definitely smell when wearing regular shoes. Hubby also has three pairs of VFFs and has the same experience that I have had.
The antimicrobial material definitely works. I am totally perplexed as to why some people would say their shoes stink. Could it be something other than their shoes?

OJ Simpson - Is He Innocent?
There is one sure way to get a debate going in our house; simply say "OJ is innocent." Hubby and I are on opposite sides of this debate. I have always believed that OJ either committed the crime or hired someone to do it for him. Well, news came out today that OJ may be innocent. The story from the guy claiming to have committed the murders, Glen Rogers, seems plausible; but I am still suspicious of him speaking out now. He has apparently claimed responsibility for other crimes in order to get moved to another facility or to get off of death row, so it makes me wonder if this is just another one of those incidents. There are lots of news stories today about this guy and it is really hard to sift through what is valid and what is sensationalized.
Regardless if Rogers did commit the murders or not, I find the timing of his documentary to be terrible for the families of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson. The documentary is scheduled to air the day before Thanksgiving and could cause these families to relive this painful ordeal all over again.

Walmart Under $100
For a while now I have said that it is impossible for me to go to Walmart and spend less than $100. Well, tonight I proved myself wrong. Our bill at checkout was $99.99. I guess it is possible for me to spend under $100 at Walmart.

Turn on Your Lights
This morning we had a dense fog advisory here in the Austin area. You could only see about 2 car lengths in front of you, but there were so many people who didn't have their lights on. Why would you want to drive in the dense fog and not turn on your lights? I simply don't understand. You may think they are not needed because you can see, but other people are not able to see you. It is even worse if you have a car color that is muted such a gray.
Come on people, turn on your lights!!!

44th President - Barack Obama
If I counted correctly, President Obama is the 15th President to be elected to two consecutive full terms. There are a few who finished out terms for the prior President and then was elected to a new term, but I did not count those since they were not the one actually elected to two consecutive terms.

Austin Comic Con 2012
I just spent 4 days volunteering with Wizard World for the 2012 Comic Con in Austin. I really wish I could say what an amazing experience it was again this year, but that is not the case. Here is a review of my 4 days of volunteering.
Day One: We showed up early (around 9ish) and saw several of the returning volunteers. Everything seemed like it was going to be great, but there was this odd "vibe" in the air. We primarily sat around most of the day waiting for things to do. The volunteer coordinator didn't really seem ready for the number of people who showed up - even though we all registered online in advance and she confirmed we would all be there. During day one, the weather outside was warm (in the high 80's to low 90's) and they had no air on inside the convention center, so we were all sweating a great deal. Unfortunately, no one from Wizard World thought to provide the volunteers with water, so we were all scrambling to stay hydrated. In addition, they provided pizza for lunch and didn't even buy enough pizza so everyone could have 1 slice. After stuffing approximately12,000 goodie bags, we called it a day at approximately 7:30pm. Overall, a something disorganized and disappointing day, but I decided to come back for another day.
Day Two: We started at 8am this day and did a few items to get ready for the show to begin at noon that day. Mostly we were continuing to help set things up and vendors were being checked in so they could set up their booths. Unfortunately, the organization was about the same as the day before, but at least we now had an understanding as to why the "vibe" seemed so odd...Wizard World has a new CEO. The new CEO is all about the business and not so much about making the experience fun. As it would turn out, over the course of the four days, I would experience his temperament and attitude several times. Once the doors opened, it just got more chaotic. The people manning the vendor check in booth seemed unprepared for how busy it was going to be, so they were causing lines to back up unnecessarily. It was a very busy day, but again, not very fun. They at least had water for the volunteers today, but they did get enough so you had to make sure you kept ahold of your bottle so you could refill in the bathrooms. But unfortunately, they didn't bother to let anyone know when food arrived, so many of us had to do with the snack bars we had brought or go to a restaurant near by to get food. Some people never even got breaks. The show closed at 8 that day, so we spent a full 12 hours of going full speed ahead. That day, I never even got to see the showroom floor - the new CEO didn't want us there unless we were working on the floor or taking a break (which we didn't get).
Day Three: Hubby got really bad blisters on both of his feet from standing and walking for 12 straight hours, so he wasn't able to return with me for day three. It was probably for the best. Day three was the really busy day. We were again there at 8am and the show would go until 7pm. Today I was determined to take breaks and get away from my assigned desk - one way or another. I took a quick break to go find food and drink, only to learn that the line was so long that I could not get through it on my allotted break time. As for food, supposedly they provided food for the volunteers, but I never saw any. I tried to go to the snack bar to at least get nachos or something, only to find out they were sold out of food. Today, I heard a LOT of complaints about how the shows was being run this year. Most of the complaints were coming from the vendors. They were allowed to bring in food and drink for themselves (and again, the snack bar line was either too long or they were sold out). They complained that the staff wasn't very nice or helpful. The number of complaints just supported the vibe I was getting. I left on day two promptly at 7. I had no desire to hang around for the after show events.
Day Four: I again arrived at 8 and the mood in the air was really bad on day four. Several of the staff members were from New York and they were all getting notice that their flights home were getting cancelled due to the hurricane. I witnessed to CEO jump all over another staff member because of the way the held a piece of paper. All in all, it was a horrible day. I decided I was not going to stay the whole day, so I left at 1. I signed out and decided to walk the showroom floor and see the event. I got to meet Lou Ferrigno and Paul McGillion. I picked up a couple of other items from some of the artists there and then headed home. I also managed to snap a few pictures with my phone. Some of the artists that I wanted to go back and visit on day four, were not there. They had left the show early. One of them that did not come back for the last day was one who had complained to me the day before about how they were not happy about the changes the new CEO had made.
All in all, the four day experience was not pleasant. So much so, that I won't volunteer with them again. I love volunteering with various events, but this one has changed so much that I won't be coming back as long as they have the same CEO in place.

Dining Room Set
We purchased a new dining table and chairs this weekend. Previously we had a pub style set, but since I am on the short side, it just wasn't comfortable. The one we purchased is normal height with cushy chairs. We haven't had a comfortable dining set in such a long time that I had forgotten how nice it is to sit and talk while you eat. No television, just conversation and maybe a little music.

Mushrooms
These cool looking mushrooms were in a yard in our neighborhood. They are huge and look like they belong in a fairy tale. They look to be about 6-8 inches in diameter (I didn't go in the yard to confirm). At first I thought they were fake, but they are very real.

Native Texan Hatch Green Chile Bean Dip
This is one of the items we picked up at Central Market this weekend. I really like dips and sauces (I attribute that to my grandfather who wanted a sauce or gravy with every meal), so I am always up for trying new ones.
I had this one today and it is fantastic. There is a little heat from the peppers, but it is packed with flavor.

Hatch Green Chiles
Today we went to Central Market because they are having their Hatch Green Chile festival. We were hoping to find some Hatch Sausage or just get some roasted Hatch chiles. Unfortunately, when we got there we learned it had already been going on for 2 weeks, do they didn't have the items we had hoped for. We ended up buying several things, just not the items we were hoping for.

He Will Be Missed
I found out yesterday that a neighbor and fellow community volunteer that hubby and I had gotten to know had passed away unexpectedly a couple of weeks ago. He was fairly young, only 59. We were at City Hall paying our utility bill and bumped in to his girl friend who shared the news. She was understandably having a hard time, so all I know is that it was very unexpected. I find my thoughts drifting to his girls. He was a single dad (not sure of his family situation, he didn't really speak about it) of two girls that are in their early teens. He passed away just a couple of weeks before school would have started for them and they were very close. I can only imagine how devastated they must be. I know the road ahead will be tough for his girls, his parent, and his siblings, so I hope they can find a way to be at peace with what has happened and move forward.

Sick of Being Sick
Hubby and I have both been sick for what seems like forever. We originally got sick during the last week of July and were both on antibiotics. Then we got better and now we are sick again, but this time with different things. About 10 days ago I went back to the doc because I was just feeling crappy and found out I had an upper respiratory infection. She put me on Levaquin for 14 days and I am almost done with them. Then last week hubby went to the doc because he just had absolutely no energy, was losing weight, and was having stomach issues. We found out he has some kind of stomach bug and he is on Cipro for 7 days. Unfortunately, the side effects from the medications are almost as bad as the problems they are treating. I have no energy, my muscle ache and cramp, and I have had a headache so long I am not sure what it would feel like to not have one. Hubby is the same way. We know it is the medication and we both only have 3 days left, so we are sticking it out. We are both so tired of being sick.
Being sick seems to be overshadowing everything. Only 3 more days and we can get our normal lives back on track. I am sooooo ready.

Our yard was chosen as one of the yards of the 2 yards of the month for our neighborhood. All the credit goes to hubby. Since he did all the work, I guess he gets the gift card too.

One Of Those Days
Do you ever have those days where you just wish you could start over or crawl back in bed and stay there? That is what I would like to do today. It started when my dogs woke me up an hour earlier than normal. So instead of sleeping until 5:30, I was out of bed at 4:30. Then when I went next door to feed the neighbors dog about 6am, I noticed the police driving by doing their normal patrol. About 20 minutes later when I was coming out, they were driving by again. This time they pulled over to the curb and asked if everything was okay. I told them yes and asked if there was a problem. They had apparently noticed the garage closing when I went in and was just checking. I explained what I was doing and they went on their way. Then I stopped at the store to get my breakfast only to learn they didn't carry my kind of yogurt - argh. So I settled for another brand and headed on to work. Once finally at work, the emails just won't stop. It is not unusual for me to get around 100 emails a day, but I think I have already gotten that many before lunch today. I think it is time for me to take my salad and go find a nice quiet place to hide and eat!

New Lawn Mower
It may sound silly, but we ordered a new lawn mower today and I am really looking forward to receiving it. Currently we have an electric mower and I am not good at managing the cord. The new one is the same brand, Black and Decker, but it is battery powered. Hopefully it will arrive by Friday. If not, it should be here by Monday.

A Loan Shark Is Cheaper
Hubby saw a commercial yesterday advertising a $10,000 loan from Western Sky Financial and you could get it same day. The commercial basically made is sound like there was no strings attached. Until you read the fine print, of course. The fine print said there was an interest rate of 89.68%. If you calculate that out over the life of the loan, that would come to over $62,000!
You could go to a loan shark cheaper than 89.68% interest. Heck, even if you didn't pay the loan shark and he decided to break your legs, the hospital bill would be cheaper than $62,000.
I really feel sorry for these people who call this company for a loan and don't read the fine print.

Squishy Baff
A couple of weeks ago, I saw Squishy Baff setting on the shelf at Walmart. There was one lone box sitting in amongst some other items. The bright green color on the box got my attention and then I couldn't pass it up. Squishy Baff is a powder that turns bath water in to goo and then back to water again. My nephews will love it, but my sister-in-law may not be as thrilled. Sorry Sis.

Happy Birthday
There are several people who have birthdays in June that I want to wish a happy birthday.
Happy belated birthday to my friend Katreader who had a birthday on the 10th; a coworker celebrated his birthday on the 13th; my brother turns 41 on the 15th; and lastly, my Dad celebrates number 63 on the 25th.
Hope everyone has a wonderful birthday.

Soft Scrub Total Kitchen
This stuff is the absolute best. I forgot to clean our George Fireman grill for about two weeks. I had grilled pork chops with a balsamic glaze and the grill was a caked on mess. Hubby even commented that this may have to be donated to Goodwill because it was such a mess. As I was digging around for something to use, I found a bottle of Soft Scrub Total Kitchen under the sink. I sprayed the foam on and let it sit for about 20 to 30 minutes and it literally wiped clean! I couldn't believe it. I will definitely keep a bottle of this around from now on.

Unusual Name
I heard on the radio today a story about a lady in Louisiana that is upset because her daughter's name is being mispronounced. The daughter's name is spelled La-a. How would you pronounce this? .....
According to the mother, "the dash ain't silent".
Personally, I think this is ridiculous. Are we really supposed to pronounce the punctuation now? I am all for giving children unique names, but you can't be stupid about it.

I have had two really crappy days in a row at work and this afternoon my sister sent me this pic of my nephews. Between the pic of my nephews and shooting 200 rounds at the gun range on date night, my day has finally gotten better.

Glee
Ok, I admit it, I am a Gleek. Tonight's episode was about saying goodbye as they graduate, but Kurt's dad made me laugh so hard. Hubby laughed so hard he had tears rolling down his face. He did a performance to Beyonce's "Single Ladies."

Walk In the Park
Hubby and I were out for a walk in the park hoping to find some blackberries. Unfortunately, the squirrels beat us to the blackberries, but we did have a great walk in the park. Below is a couple of pictures I snapped while we were out. The first is a memorial to fallen war heroes and the other is a butterfly I thought looked really pretty.

Pennsylvania Boy Urinates on Computers
The DJ's on the radio this morning were talking about a news story out of Pennsylvania where an 11 year old boy urinated on a cart full of school computers causing $36,000 worth of damage. On the radio, everyone seemed to be focused on the fact that the computers were left on an unattended cart. My question is why would the kid do something like that? Was he ticked off at the school or teachers for some reason? He is clearly at an age where he knows better, so what made him think that urinating on a cart full on MacBooks was a good idea? And how come no one saw him?

Snow Peas
This year I planted snow peas in my garden and they are doing really well. They have great flavor and the temperature has been cool enough that we are getting lots of pods. Unfortunately, my neighbor has discovered how good they taste as well. When she comes over to visit, she "snacks" on snow peas while we visit. I tease her that I am going to lock the gate just so I can have my own snow peas.

The Fat Daddy
The Fat Daddy is the name of this sandwich that hubby had for dinner last night at a local bar called the Hall of Fame. It is like a Dagwood made with barbecue. If you eat the whole thing, you get your picture on the wall of fame. Hubby was the first person to ever finish it.

Crawfish Festival
Today was Hutto's First Annual Crawfish Festival. Hubby and I volunteered for about 4 hours. We helped set up, cook hot dogs and sausage, serve crawfish, and then we helped man our Keep Hutto Beautiful booth. It was a great time for everyone and it went over much better than expected. Below is a picture of kids on the climbing wall.

Ready, Aim, Fire!
Thursday night is date night in our house. Tonight was hubby's turn to plan the date, so we went to the gun range. We had a great time and after we left and we sitting down to dinner, we realized they never charged us for our gun rental, lane fees, target charges, or ammo. We felt really bad, so we went back to make sure we paid them. We plan to go back in two weeks when it is hubby's turn to plan the date again.

Garden
My garden is beginning to bloom. I now have Yellow Pear tomatoes, Red Cherry tomatoes, snow peas, bell peppers, and cayenne peppers that have fruit on them. The cucumbers have began to bloom, but no fruit just yet. Although hubby has done 99% of the work, I still call it my garden. He is actually the one with the green thumb in the family.

Here is my first Day Lily bloom of the season. From looking at the buds on the other plants, there will be plenty more to come.

Wait or Buy Now?
Two months after my car accident, I have finally been paid for my vehicle. No thanks to the other persons insurance. I ended up turning the claim over to my insurance, State Farm, and they had everything wrapped up in 1 week. One week! I waited on the pest control company's insurance for 7 weeks and they did nothing but drag their feet.
Now we need to decide if we should replace the car now or wait a little while and see if they will offer specials on the car we want. I think it is time to sit down with my pros and cons list. We already know what we want, so that decision is out of the way.

Red Robin
Hubby and I love eating at Red Robin, but only at one particular location in Austin. The other location has good food, but horrible service. We were going to go to our favorite location about 3 weeks ago, only to find that they had gone out of business. We were so disappointed.
Then last week we finally gave in and decided to give the other location another chance. As it turned out, a couple of the waitstaff transferred to that store and we were lucky enough to get one of them as our server. The overall atmosphere still wasn't as good as the other location used to be, but it wasn't as bad as previously.
We are still stunned that they closed our favorite location considering it was always so busy, but apparently it just wasn't profitable enough.

Rack of Lamb
I had my first lamb today at Outback Steakhouse. It was very good. It went great with the green beans off of hubby's plate.

Dim Sum
We decided to extend hubby's birthday celebration and go out to have dim sum today. Curry Squid is my favorite dish. We also had Peking Duck, Coffee Ribs, Chinese Broccoli, Turnip Cakes, Mango Custard, and so many other delicious dishes.

Happy Birthday Hubby
Today is hubby's 47th birthday. He says he only feels 27 (I wish I could say that).
The weather is rainy and gloomy, but we are going to have fun and make the best if it.

There Are No Mistakes In Life
I have always been a believer that everything happens for a reason. Tonight I heard it put another way... There are no mistakes in life. Sometimes things happen and you wonder "why me". Maybe it was to put you back on track, or maybe to expand your social circle, or to teach you something new. Even if you never learn the reason, just remember that it wasn't a mistake.

Garden Update
I planted my garden almost 2 weeks ago and so far everything but my peppers is beginning to come up. I have broccoli, spinach, asparagus, snow peas, red onions, chives, cucumbers, and tomatoes. Hopefully in the next few days we will see the hot peppers and bell peppers make an appearance.

Eggies
Have you seen the Eggies advertised on tv? For those who might not have seen them, they are the plastic containers that you crack an egg in to and it will produce a perfectly boiled egg. Well, I decided I wanted to try them. Unfortunately, they were not as easy to use as they appeared.
First, you have to crack an egg and get it to pour in to an opening the size of a quarter. If you don't do it just right, the egg ends up on the counter instead of inside the Eggie. Second, you have to oil the inside of the Eggie so the boiled egg will come out easy when cooked. That does work, but when the egg cooks, the oil gives the egg white a very rubbery texture.
All in all, it took twice as long to make boiled eggs using the Eggie and they didn't taste as good.

Monopoly Hotels
I have found a new game for my iPhone called Monopoly Hotels. It is very addictive. You buy and build hotels just like the board game. You earn your money from the rent and from money that falls from the sky. I even have hubby hooked.

Time Flies
I didn't realize how long it has been since I blogged. It seems like time is flying by these days. So here is a quick catch up since my last blog.
We spent Superbowl Sunday at a friend house. We made enough food to feed an army. We had ribs, steaks, queso, sweet potato, and jalapeño poppers. We all gather at his house and then we all chip in to do the cooking. It is always a blast.
Then on Tuesday, I was rear ended on my way home from work. The guy who hit me was going about 60, so I have spent the last several days recovering from the accident. I was very lucky and only received a large bump on the head. Now I just need to see what they are going to do with my poor car, which didn't fare quite as well.

Longhorn Steakhouse
Last night hubby and I tried a new restaurant in our area called Longhorn Steakhouse. Our neighbor raved about it and said the one on the east coast was fantastic. Sadly, we were not impressed. The temperature in the restaurant was so cold it was affecting the temperature of our food. We had to ask multiple times to get it adjusted so we could eat comfortably. The service was extremely slow and the place was not that busy. One salad was so overdressed it was drippy and the other salad had virtually no dressing. The chicken was overcooked and what they called a chicken breast was actually three chicken strips covered by a portabella mushroom. Hubby's steak was cooked properly and he said it was good, but the rest of the meal was unimpressive. Not a place I would go back to again.

Bifocals
I went to have my eye exam today and the doc said it was time for bifocals. At first, I was disappointed because bifocals are for old people and I am only in my mid forties. Then he showed me what I would see with them. Holy moly, I had no idea what I was missing!
I ordered them today, no transitions this time, and they should be here in 10 to 14 days. I am actually excited for them to come in so I can begin seeing clearly again.

Protecting the Torpedo
Hubby and I were out geocaching when we came upon this guy. He was taking his guard duty serious. There was a couple of us wanting to look at this monument, but he made sure we kept a respectable distance.

Glasses
I have decided that when I get new glasses at the end if the month, I am giving up the transition lens. The last 2 pair have not been living up to the standards of the first pair.

Shameless
I am so happy that the show Shameless is back. This is one of the shows that I look forward to every week.
Is there a show you look forward to every week?

Brussel Sprouts
Tonight we made brussel sprouts with dinner. We had a few left over, so we thought we would see if the dogs would eat them. They actually loved them! Who knew.

Happy New Years
How did you spend your first day of 2012? My first day of 2012 was a spill over from the last day of 2011. About 10:30pm last night I stepped out of my neighbors house to go check on my dogs and when I opened her door, there was the cutest litte black daschund at her door step. It was scared from all of the fireworks going on in the area. We spent the next hour looking for its owner and trying to decide what to do. We decided she would keep it over night and we would decide what to do today. We put a sign in her yard saying we found the dog and then ushered in the new year while working on a jigsaw puzzle. By 2pm today, the owner still had not called, so we ended up taking the dog to a local animal shelter. After that, hubby and I put out our first cache and decided to call it a day.
