Vietnamese Pot Belly Pig

I haven't posted lately because I have been so busy with work, school, and volunteer activities.  I plan to get back on track with posting and I will start with this cute picture. 

This cute little guy was at the Hutto Olde Tyme Days festival.  He weighed about 3 pounds and was about the size of a little puppy.   He was too cute. 

Don't Leave Your Dog In the Car

The county I live in, Williamson, is very strict about people leaving their animals in the car while they go in to a business.  We recently had a lady whose dog died after being left in the car for 15 minutes.  In the Texas heat, it doesn't take long for your dog to dehydrate and die.  

Today when hubby and I went to Target, we saw a little chihuahua left in the car.  We watched it for about 8-10 minutes and when the owner didn't come back, I called the police.  The owner arrived as I was giving the info to the police.  I politely reminded her that it was illegal to leave her dog in the car.  She yelled at her kid to get in the car and mumbled a few things then left.  She was buying a vacuum and didn't think she would be in the store that long.  

Nonetheless, the police took her info and will probably contact her to remind her that she needs the leave the dog at home next time.  If they had arrived, they would have cited her for negligence or animal cruelty.

If no one is going to stay in the car with your pet, please just leave them at home.

Chris P. Bacon

I heard about Chris on the news last night and he is so adorable.  You have to check out his videos on You Tube.  He is also on Facebook and Twitter.  I have never considered having a pot bellied pig, but this little guy would totally change my mind.

Fish Patty and the Chili Judge

Today Hubby and I went to Cabela's shopping.  We had never been and it is quite a distance from our house, but we decided to go check it out.  When we got there they were having a Chili Cook-Off in the parking lot to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.  We didn't stop to check it out because we were going to have lunch with hubby's sister and we didn't want to dilly dally.  When we were finishing our shopping, his sister texted and said she wasn't able to make lunch after all.  So, on the way out of the store, one of the guys from the chili cook off grabbed hubby and asked him to be one of the judges.  We didn't have plans, so he decided to participate.  Twenty-two chili samples later and we were back on our way home.  He had fun and the people there were really nice.  I am glad it was him and not me because he has a much stronger stomach.

On the way home, we stopped at Petco to pick up some glucosamine for the dogs and instead of buying their stuff, we pick up a new member of the family instead.  We purchased a female blue fantail Betta.  Her name will be Fish Patty.  We have noticed that our male Betta, Fish Stick, is making bubbles and that is supposed to mean they are ready for a partner.  We are leaving them in separate containers tonight and so far they have been checking each other out.  No one is puffing up like they want to fight, so that is a good sign.

Protecting the Torpedo

Hubby and I were out geocaching when we came upon this guy. He was taking his guard duty serious. There was a couple of us wanting to look at this monument, but he made sure we kept a respectable distance.

Happy New Years

How did you spend your first day of 2012?  My first day of 2012 was a spill over from the last day of 2011.  About 10:30pm last night I stepped out of my neighbors house to go check on my dogs and when I opened her door, there was the cutest litte black daschund at her door step.  It was scared from all of the fireworks going on in the area.  We spent the next hour looking for its owner and trying to decide what to do.  We decided she would keep it over night and we would decide what to do today. We put a sign in her yard saying we found the dog and then ushered in the new year while working on a jigsaw puzzle.  By 2pm today, the owner still had not called, so we ended up taking the dog to a local animal shelter.  After that, hubby and I put out our first cache and decided to call it a day.

What a Tough Life

Hubby and I had to go to Petco the other day to pick up some items.  As we were heading to the check out, we spotted this guy.  Life seems really tough in his world.  Wouldn't it be nice if we all had such a carefree life?

Armadillo

There is an armadillo that is terrorizing our yard.  He has come by on a few occasions and is digging (rooting around actually) in our flower beds and in our yard.  We have tried several things to make him go away, but he is a sneaky little devil and just finds a new spot.  Last night he was  in our front yard and he made 30-40 new holes.

Bats

We seem to have a lot of bats that hang around in our area.  Late in the evenings, we can see them flying all around.  I don't know much about bats, but they are kind of cool to watch.

Michael Vick - Subway Sportsman of the Year

I heard today that Michael Vick was voted as the Subway Sportsman of the Year.  They should have voted someone who could be a true role model for people and not someone like Michael Vick who tortured innocent animals for the entertainment of him and his friends.  I hear that many people are boycotting Subway because of this.  I realize they were just the sponsor of the award and they are not the ones who selected him, but I suspect they will be catching a lot of heat for this one from all of the animal lovers in the world.  As far as I am concerned, the 18 months that Vick spent is prison was not nearly enough.  He should have spent 18 months for each dog that he hurt or killed.

Finch Nest

Hubby was checking out the flowers today and noticed something laying in the flower bed.  When he looked closer, he noticed it was bird egg.  Apparently it fell from a nest that is in our hedges.  He looked and there is still 3 more little eggs there, so hopefully we will have some little baby finches very soon.

Wounded by a Frog

We have this frog that hangs out by our water hose. He isn't a baby, but he isn't yet full grown either. Every Thursday and Sunday when we water the grass, he tries to get in to our garage. We have to keep an eye on him because if we accidentally close him in, he will not be able to get back out and he will die from the heat of the garage. Last night while I was watering the grass, I thought I would outsmart Mr. Frog - I didn't open the garage door to go in and out while watering. Well, on the next to the last movement of the sprinklers as I am rounding the corner of the house to turn off the water, Mr. Frog jumps out at me. The garage door wasn't open, so I wasn't on the look out for him. I see him and quickly realize that he is going to land in the exact same spot as my foot. I don't want to squish this from, so I do a little stutter step to miss him and in the process I twisted the crap out of my knee. The knee was already swollen and achy because of my arthritis acting up, but for the rest of the night it was even more swollen and painful. The frog? He was fine and just hopped away as if nothing ever happened. I am sure he will be back again on Thursday.

First Dog

One of my coworkers got her first dog this weekend. She has been thinking about it for a really long time and just happened to drive by one of the pet stores and saw the rescue group outside. This little pup caught her attention and so she made the leap into puppy parenthood. Unfortunately, the friends who were with her told her all of the easy things about raising a puppy and forgot to tell her about the not so easy parts like potty trips outside every 2 hours and how little sleep you get until they settle in to their new routine. She was a little frustrated today from lack of sleep, but after we talked for a while hopefully she will enjoy the new puppy.

Saving A Turtle

Yesterday evening hubby and I decided to get out of the house and go to Target. Just after we pulled out of our subdivision, we saw a large turtle in one lane of the road. It had a bright red spot on the top and we thought it must have been dead. We decided to turn around and go check anyway. As we got closer, we saw that he (or maybe it was a she) wasn't dead and was actually trying to get across the road. He was bleeding where one of the cars had clipped the top of his shell, but he was still very much alive. I pulled off of the road as much as possible and put my hazard lights on so the traffic whizzing by at 60+ mph would at least see me while hubby went to move the turtle off of the road.

As hubby bent down to pick him up, he realized this wasn't just any turtle, it was a big snapping turtle and he was not happy. I am watching from the car and hubby turns the turtle toward me; all I can see is his huge mouth open and he is looking for something to bite. As traffic clears, hubby runs him across the road and puts him in some tall grass near the pond. As they were running across the road, the turtle made one last effort at trying to get away and peed on my hubby.

With the turtle safely out of harms way we headed on to Target. Once there, hubby immediately went to the bathroom to clean off the turtle pee and I stayed outside for a few minutes cleaning it off of a few places in my car. It was worth having to clean up a little urine to save the turtle from getting killed.
