Glasses in the Freezer

When got my glasses with transition lenses a few years ago, the tech told me to go home and put them in the freezer overnight. When he told me that I that he was playing a prank on me, but I did it anyway. About a year later my hubby got new glasses with the transition lenses and they did not tell him to put them in the freezer. We followed their instructions thinking they knew what they were doing. Unfortunately after about a year the film on his glasses began to peel. It was so bad it was in his line of vision. Of course they started peeling after the 1 year warranty expired. I have been wearing the same pair of glasses since 2005 and have not had any issues with the film peeling. The only thing done differently with the two pair is that mine spent a night in the freezer before being worn. We both use the same cleaning solution and cloths so that could not have caused the difference. When I mentioned this to the techs a the glasses place they didn't say we should put them in the freezer, but they didn't say we shouldn't. Actually I think they were trying to determine if I was joking. Needless to say, the pair we purchased today is spending a night in the freezer before getting worn! They are way too expensive to risk having them start to peel so soon.

  1. Interesting. I've never heard of that, I don't have transition lenses though. When I first read the title I thought you couldn't find your eyeglasses and somehow they got in your freezer. Then I was like, that's silly-she must be chilling drinking glasses. Guess I was more on track the first time. LOL.

  2. Just a couple of years late but just thought i'd add that I was told yesterday to put my glasses go the freezer as I had reported the transition lenses I had just bought were not very effective. They told me this was to help form the active crystals. They seem much better now by the way. Just thought i'd let you know. :-)

  3. Found this blog via Google Search of "Transition Lenses Freezer". Longer story short, my tech just told me to after I had stepped outside and they failed to work. She said just 15 minutes but I might just keep them in there over night per your suggestion. Ha! Thanks.

  4. Well I had to get my glasses fixed after getting transition lenses. They had scratches all on the lenses. Now I have got them back and only one transition lense darkens.

  5. I was not sure, now I realize after reading posts that this is not unheard of. I am trying now. I will see if there is a noticeable different after glasses in freezer. Glad to know I was not only 1 questioning it.

  6. My walmart tech told me that if the glares don't transition then they are not activated. To activate it just put them in the freezer over night.... I agree to i thought it was weird myself.

  11. While freezing them makes then change faster, this effect goes away when they warm up. To the person who had them peel, transitions isn't a coating. It was probably the A/R coming off.

  12. Yep. U buy crap from wall Mart they put on a film just like ur car windows. U buy real glasses made outta glass not plastic ur darkener is mixed in with ur liquid glass so it will never peel or look like it's melting. Remember glass is a liquid always even when it breaks. Just doesn't seem like it cause it does break. Just look at old windows 100-150 YEARS OLD!! Gravity is making the glass shrink down because of that.
